castello di pomaro

Pomaro Monferrato is a small village known mainly because of its medieval castle located on the top of the hill.
Today the building resembles a u-shaped manor house built in red terracotta bricks. Its many-sided crenellated towers show Ghibelline merlons atop.

The foundations prove the antique origins of the Castle,
originally built at the beginning of the XIIIth century.
Later its walls were further reinforced to make them look more like a dungeon.
Subsequently the Castle was the target for several attacks, which resulted in damage to its structure.

In 1929, during the important refurbishing works undertaken by Marquise Della Valle, a jagged decorative motif was uncovered on its façade as well as some window panes with genuine medieval details.
Most of the land surrounding the Castle comprises an original nineteenth century garden.
